More than 9000 KMB bus captains and outdoor staff will get a new look when the company's new uniforms are introduced in December 2000. The new image of outdoor staff is one of the initiatives taken by KMB to enhance the quality of its staff in the 21st century.
"The three major colours of the new uniforms, light yellow, red and grey not only give the bus captains a youthful and energetic appearance, but also reflect that they are reliable and willing to serve. The new uniforms also demonstrate KMB's commitment to enhance its services in the new millennium" said KMB's Operations Director, Mr Lui Po Chiu.
The newly designed bus captains, inspectors and regulators' uniforms feature a summer and winter range. The bus captains' new summer uniform features both a short sleeved shirt in light yellow, red and grey matched with dark grey trousers. A long sleeved shirt and a three-colour warm jacket are provided for winter wear. The inspectors and regulators' summer uniform features a white shirt and dark grey trousers. A long sleeved shirt, an executive look grey jacket and a three-colour jacket are provided for winter wear. For variety, bus captains and regulators can choose from a set of red and grey bow ties or clip on ties.
Mr Lui explained, "Instead of making the whole piece in grey and white, two bright colours have been added in the new design, giving an impression of life and energy to KMB. The styling has taken into account the nature of a bus captain's job. For instance, the shirts allow for large arm movement during driving, and the bus captains and regulators' jackets are water repellent, wind resistant and warm. The jacket also includes a detachable fleece vest, making it suitable for staff working in different climatic conditions."
The fabrics chosen for the new uniforms enable the bus captains and regulators to be more comfortable. The bus captains' and regulators' shirts are made of polyester and cotton, the trousers and the executive look grey jackets are made of polyester and viscose, and the warm jackets are made of nylon with a water resistant breathable coating. These fabrics were chosen because they are versatile and durable while also being anti-wrinkle and easy-care.
As the largest bus company in Hong Kong, KMB realises the importance of continually upgrading its services. Besides enhancing the image of bus captains, KMB has increased the number of its outdoor staff. Over the past five years, the number of KMB bus captains has increased by 15%, from about 7000 to over 8000, and their average period of service is ten years.
To further improve service, KMB has completed a large-scale training programme for over 10,000 front-line staff. Subsequently, commendations from the public concerning the performance of these outdoor staff have increased by 25%, providing evidence of the programmes effectiveness. The new uniforms revitalise the image of KMB's bus captains and enhance the quality of their service.
Great Kingdom Uniform Mfg. Co., Ltd. is the designer and supplier of KMB's new uniforms. Front-line staff representatives have been consulted about the design of the new uniforms.
