(Hong Kong - 16 February 2001) "Founder GB18030 Font Library" together with "Founder Font SuperLibrary" developed by one of the PRC subsidiaries of Founder Holdings Limited (SEHK: 418), Beijing Founder Electronics Co., Ltd. ("Beijing Founder Electronics") today received a state-level recognition granted by State News and Publishing Bureau, State Language Committee and China National Printing Font Committee. This is the first time for any font-library product in China to have received a state-level recognition, after the promulgation of the latest Nation-wide Chinese Character Standard for Computer Usage, GB18030-2000.
Released by State Language Committee in March 2000, GB18030-2000 is promulgated for enforcement on 1st of January 2001. The necessity for a new standard is brought on by the deficiency of the former standard (GB2312-1980), which included only 6,000 commonly used Chinese characters. Computers previously installed with GB2312-based font libraries therefore become illiterate, when having to process less familiar characters. The necessity to solve "computer-literacy" problem became more and more acute with the expanding informatization need in all walks of life.
According to the evaluation commission, "Founder GB18030 Font Library" and "Founder Font SuperLibrary" are characteristic of five features: (1) Full coverage of Chinese characters. In conformity with the GB18030-2000, "Founder GB18030 Font Library" includes more than 27,000 Chinese characters. As for "Founder Font SuperLibrary", the coverage is even more expansive, including more than 56,000 Chinese characters plus other major characters used in Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese. Altogether does "Founder Font SuperLibrary" cover 70,244 characters. (2) Full compatibility. The two font libraries can be installed on different OS (operation systems). (3) Consistent display and output. Using TrueType font for displaying and PostScript page description language (PDL) for quality output, the two font libraries successfully achieve the "WYSIWYG" effect on various output equipment and modes. 4) Elegance in style. 5) Mature technology and stable performance.
The development of "Founder GB18030 Font Library" and "Founder Font SuperLibrary" by Beijing Founder Electronics gives great momentum for the enforcement of GB18030-2000. The two font libraries shall provide complete solutions to cope with name/place name "computer-illiteracy" problems occurring to fields, such as domicile administration, postal service, financial service and GIS systems. They shall also supply a uniform Chinese-language platform for research work in Chinese ancient books as well as the Chinese language. Being part of Beijing Founder Electronic's "e-Media" development strategy, the two font libraries are to play an important role for the Chinese information distribution on Internet, which promises to further the informatization process in China as well as the world-wide information distribution in the Chinese language.
