KMB Introduces Multi-Media On Board

On 24 November 2000, KMB will introduce Hong Kong's first two 'Multi-Media On Board' (MMOB) buses, to provide infotainment programmes to passengers. Installed with LCD monitors, the MMOB buses will broadcast programmes offering information, news about charitable organisations, and other infotainment content, enabling passengers to enjoy a more pleasant and added-value journey.

Over the years, KMB has introduced various advanced technological facilities in order to enhance bus services. In September 1999 KMB has begun equipping some bus termini with the LED display panels, and more recently the installation of the electronic bus stop announcement system in its bus fleet, thus assisting passengers with alighting at their desired bus stop. KMB has also started to equip buses with electronic fare displays to help passengers with preparing their bus fares. Furthermore, the cyber bus stop enables passengers to browse KMB's website and to search for or listen to bus service information.

Mr Lui Po-chiu, KMB Operations Director, stated " Cyber interactive technology has already become part of the life of Hong Kong people. According to the survey we did in last September, about 80% of the interviewees find the service concept of offering infotainment programmes on board appealing, and over 80% welcome programmes which have both audio and visual effects. To further cope with passengers' expectation, KMB is taking the lead by introducing the innovative MMOB buses. While riding on these buses, passengers can enjoy different types of information and added-value services at all times."

The MMOB buses are installed with an innovative set of informative, audio and visual systems. The two LCD monitors installed on each deck have a 160o viewing angle. Passengers can enjoy various kinds of information, news about charitable organisations and other infotainment programmes.

In the next phase, KMB plans to provide traffic information, news and weather broadcasts on buses. Moreover, once Global Positioning System (GPS), which can further enhance the management, re-deployment and utilisation of KMB's bus fleet, is accurately available in Hong Kong, KMB also plans to apply the GPS technology to MMOB buses and the cyber bus stops. The GPS can keep track of the movement of buses and their arrival times. Combining the GPS with the cyber bus stops will make it possible for passengers to know the exact arrival time of the next bus through the displayed and announced information.

Mr Lui Po-chiu, KMB Operations Director, added " These days people are very time conscious and like to have up to date information to be readily available. The MMOB bus enables passengers to get different kinds of information very easily during their bus journey. Thus, the MMOB buses demonstrate KMB's commitment to provide passengers with advanced technological facilities at all times."

The first 100 MMOB buses will serve passengers from early December 2000.
